At 75 years old, she had a vibrant social circle. Though she had been widowed for many years and living alone, she was rarely lonely. Her friends, family and social interaction kept a sparkle in her eyes, warmth in her laughter and vigor in her step. “Jane” made me realize that one of the secrets of successful aging lies in our friendships with others.

The question is “how could this lack of interaction affect overall health”? There is solid scientific research that friends actually change the biochemistry of our brains and the functioning of our immune systems. People with rich social relationships live longer than those who are lonely. Friendships and continued socializing as we age creates a feeling of belonging, a buffer against stress and sense of purpose in feeling needed by our friends. When a friend lets us know that we are loved and valued, our self-esteem rises.

Having a strong social support system actually delays the brain’s aging process while enhancing both memory and intelligence.

Jane lived so well as she grew older because she cultivated her old friends and stimulated her mind by getting to know new ones. The lesson that we all can learn and never forget, beyond anything else, is that we truly need each other.

The Paragon is a wonderful place to reacquaint with old friends and meet new ones. We have a wonderful activity program that is designed to include different interests. If you have an idea for an activity, please let Sherry know. She is always looking for new ideas!

If you have certain limitations that may restrict you from doing certain activities, please feel free to come, watch & socialize. Remember—socialization is the key to promote good health.

We are so lucky to share each day with our residents, family members & staff. Be kind to one another, if you don’t know someone, introduce yourself , invite some old friends to visit The Paragon and always wear a smile!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
God Bless,
Nancy

The Kitchen Korner

Two of our favorite ingredients are included in this special Valentine’s Day dessert—Chocolate & Peanut Butter

Crispy Peanut Butter Balls Recipe

Ingredients
2 cups creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup butter, softened
3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 cups crisp rice cereal
4 cups (24 ounces) HERSHEY’®S Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon shortening, divided
1/3 cup vanilla or white chips

Directions
In a large bowl, beat peanut butter and butter until blended; gradually beat in confectioners' sugar. I will begin with a few announcements. Once again, I would like to mention that if anyone is interested in volunteering their time at The Paragon with our residents to please contact me, Sherry Stuart. I would be delighted to talk with anyone that may be interested. You may also know someone that has a special talent or just some free time to play cards, a game, work a puzzle, play the piano or help with bingo!

Speaking of volunteering brings me to yet another subject and a very sad one indeed. I want to express that everyone one of us, residents and staff alike, was so very saddened to hear about the passing of one of our extremely dedicated volunteers, Ms. Kim Reynolds. For those of you that may not have met Kim, she was a friend to all of us. She would come on the weekends after lunch to play cards with a few of our residents. On the days that she didn’t play cards she was always willing to help someone else, whether it was a resident or a staff member. She also called bingo, and as I said before, helped in any area that you needed her to. We all will miss her very much and may God be with her family and friends during this difficult time.

Next, I want to mention that we are planning our next family night. Our theme will be “Mardi Gras”. The tentative date is set for Monday, March 7th at 5 p.m. Be sure to mark your calendars and should this date change for any reason you’ll be the first, right after us, to know!
It’s that time again to vote/select your Valentine King and Queen for 2011. Our ballot box is located in The Dogwood Room. You may put one vote in per day. Everyone can vote, this includes staff, residents, guests, and families, but please only vote for the residents.

Ballots will be counted on February 11th. Our King and Queen of 2011 will be announced at our Valentine’s party, Monday February 14th at 3:00 p.m.

And last but not least, I want to mention a new program that has just begun. It will be called “Feeding the Children Program”(pictures on opposite page). This activity will take place once a month. We will be helping the Nebo Christian Church stuff backpacks for school children that need a little extra help. We are all very excited to be a part of this wonderful program.
Until next month,

Sherry

Notes From Ruth Barnett, RCC

We are often times asked what exactly is “Assisted Living.” In the next few issues, we want to spotlight some of the areas that you want to know about.

What is assisted living? Assisted living communities provide each resident with an apartment that has a lockable door and private bathroom. Residents can receive assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s), as well as assistance with medications. Meals, housekeeping, daily social activities, transportation, laundry and clerical services are also available. Each resident may receive health care services through a direct arrangement with an outside agency (i.e. home health care, etc) or person.

Assisted living communities offer immediate access to emergency help. The Paragon offers a life-line pendant locket based alarm system that can alert the staff if a resident falls or has some other emergency. This safety alert system can minimize the resident from a fall, stroke and other health events because help is only a few moments away.

Assisted Living facilities also have advantages because of the social interaction between residents. When comparing an assisted living facility to living at home with in-home care, the assisted living community has a much higher level of socialization. Since most meals are served in our dining room, residents are exposed to their neighbors much more than they would be living at home.

At The Paragon, we strive to provide the most home-like setting possible. From the comfortable décor and furnishings, to the stimulating programs, fine dining and flexible transportation, we strive to incorporate all the comforts and more conveniences than you can find at home. Assisted Living communities take many of the burdens of home ownership off of the residents shoulders.

The Paragon is most fortunate to have an activities coordinator that organizes special activities/events for residents.

Our activities go beyond just playing bingo! Even though our residents enjoy bingo, we offer so many other activities, such as attending special programs at Pennyrile State Park for bingo and lunch, The Glema Mahr Center, the Badgett Playhouse, going on weekly trips to the Senior Citizens Center, to the mall and bank, van rides, enjoying crafts, group outings spanning from Wal-Mart to a night at the theater.

If you have a loved one, family member or friend that would be interested in learning more about assisted living, please have them contact The Paragon at (270) 824-9006.

Until next month . . . I pray that it will be a year filled with peace and good health with each day.

I would like to thank residents, family, friends and staff, who made our annual Christmas Open House such a success. Kudos especially to our dietary department in preparing the goodies that we enjoyed. We were so happy to see so many of our family and friends. I also want to personally thank Danny & Charlotte Fireline for spending Christmas Eve with our residents with cookies and hot chocolate while sharing the story of Christmas. I know that our residents appreciated the time that they spent with them.

Additionally I want to take this time to thank those of you who contributed to the Staff Appreciation fund. Because of these generous gifts, we were able to purchase chamber checks and gift cards for each member of The Paragon staff. Thanks also to those of you who brought in so many good things to eat that contributed to the expansion of our waist lines! I personally want to express my appreciation for recognizing our staff, it means so much to them to be remembered.

We have so much to look forward to in this New Year at The Paragon. Sherry is already planning new destinations to see, new restaurants to try along with all the daily activities she plans for all to enjoy. She would, however, appreciated any ideas from family members and friends of places to go, what to see, where to eat, etc. Please don’t hesitate to let her know.

I trust that you know what a blessing it is to have an
assisted living community like The Paragon in Madisonville. It’s a wonderful place to live! The Paragon is designed for
senior adults who wish to maintain their independent lifestyle with the security of knowing that if the need arises for some additional assistance, we are there. Living at The Paragon is a wonderful opportunity to be reunited with old friends and the opportunity to meet new friends.

My continued wish for all of us is to start this New Year with hope at the beginning of each new day. We have been given each day to use as we desire. We can waste it or use it for good. Be kind to one another. But always remember, at the beginning and end of each day, to thank God for our blessings.

You know the old saying “don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.” So remember, “seize the opportunity – don’t put things off”! Invite family and friends to visit The Paragon and see for them selves what a lovely community that we have.

I extend my blessings for a New Year filled with health and happiness to you and yours.
God bless,
Nancy

The Kitchen Korner

Holiday Caramel Apple Dip (recipe provided by Carolyn Clayton, The Paragon’s hair stylist)

1 8oz tub of whipped cream cheese
1/2 cup brown sugar
Caramel dip (usually found in the produce department of grocery)
Heath Toffee Candy bits (one with chocolate)

Take 1/2 cup of brown sugar and mix with cream cheese. Happy New Year! I hope that each of you had a wonderful and joyous time with your families and loved ones over the holiday season. Also I hope this new year brings each of you happiness and prosperity.
I would like to take this time to express my gratitude to everyone that helped in making our Christmas Open House a very special one. A special “thank you” goes out to Mrs. Claus, AKA, Maria Lee! Also our residents really appreciated Danny & Charlotte Fireline for sharing Christmas Eve with them.
The next upcoming paragraphs were also printed last year but we have some new families and residents that have become part of our community. Sometimes we all need a few reminders every now and then.
I want to remind you about the use of our common areas at The Paragon Of Madisonville. These areas are primarily for use by residents, families, and their invited guests. We encourage residents to enjoy all areas of the building, including the main foyer, dining room, ice cream parlor, Dogwood Room, card room, and private dining room. Residents planning to entertain groups of 10 or more; wishing to host a meeting, or an event requiring special accommodations, should speak with Janet, the receptionist or me, the Event Coordinator to reserve the desired area and discuss special needs.

Guest and/or small community groups may also request the use of The Paragon’s facilities. Please turn in your request to reserve any of the desired common areas a minimum of 10 days prior to the planned meeting or event. Please note that the following rules apply for use of The Paragon:
1. No alcoholic beverages may be served or consumed.
2. No smoking is permitted in The Paragon, which also includes the guest restrooms.
3. Children are not allowed in the courtyard except with the supervision of an adult.

Next I want to remind everyone about our General Store. Our General Store is located in our Ice Cream Parlor. Most of the items are personal care items. If you wish to purchase something from the General Store just ask anyone on staff and they will be happy to get your items for you. The cost of the purchases will be added to your monthly statement. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days per week.
Voting for the 2011Valentine King & Queen will be coming soon. Be watching for the Ballot box.

Until next month,

Sherry

Notes From Ruth Barnett, RCC

Keeping Your the Brain Sharp

If you are interested in keeping your brain sharp, no matter what your age, there are key lifestyle behaviors you should be practicing. Besides exercise, which encourages the growth of new cells by increasing oxygen flow to your brain, and challenging your brain with skills that keep you thinking, diet plays an important part in brain health.

Although we have no control over our own genetics, as a risk factor for chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, we can make those lifestyle decisions that may help keep our brains healthier. There is much research that indicates diet, as well as the other lifestyle factors mentioned above, that can help prevent cognitive decline, especially if started early in life. So what is this “special” diet that helps promote brain function?

Although emerging science may tweak dietary recommendations, the basics for eating right, for those with and without chronic disease, are relatively well known and simple. There is no magic or secret to eating right, yet motivation and putting knowledge to practice, is the barrier. There are many correlations between the risk factors for heart disease and diabetes with increased risk for Alzheimer’s. So, the science-based dietary guidelines that are good for the heart are also good for the brain, plus good for everyone in general:

Maintain energy balance – balance energy in (calories consumed through food and beverages) with energy out (physical activity); increases in physical activity, even if small (such as walking, chair exercise, etc.) apart from diet, has been shown to slow cognitive deterioration.
Reduce sodium intake – Aim for 2,300 mg sodium or less, daily (1 teaspoon of table salt contains 2,300 mg!); choose foods low in sodium (140 mg or less sodium per serving); for those with hypertension, consume 1,500 mg or less per day for health benefits.

Build your diet around low- and non-fat dairy; beans), nuts and seeds; fish, lean meat and poultry, as well as:
Fruits and vegetables – Aim for 8-9 (1/2 cup servings) of fruits and vegetables of a variety of colors daily; choose whole fruits over fruit juices most often; drink juice that is labeled “100% juice” and “100% vitamin C” if possible.
Whole grains – whole grains are the entire grain kernel, including the outer covering that contains the grain’s fiber and many vitamins and minerals and antioxidants; aim for at least 3 ounce servings per day of whole grain foods such as (whole wheat bread, crackers, pasta, buns, tortillas; whole grain barley, rye, oatmeal, cornmeal, buckwheat, brown rice, wild rice and popcorn, whole grain cereals); choose whole grain breakfast cereals that provide at least 3-4 grams fiber per serving, no more than 8 grams total sugar, and less than 3 grams fat.
Ruth

This article was written by Darcia Brewer, a Registered Dietician and Contracted & Nutrition Services Coordinator for Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan

Nancy's Welcome Mats & Neighborly Chats

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Holidays are the time for bringing families and friends together. I hope that everyone had the opportunity to spend time with their loved ones. I also hope your upcoming Christmas holiday will be a joyful one!
Sometimes we have a tendency to get caught up in trying to figure out who is cooking what, what to buy this one or that one, that we forget the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. It is a time for giving. This season is a great time for sharing, for getting together with family and friends, and remembering the importance of family. Despite all the sicknesses and sadness that life may have brought to you or your family, I hope that each of you can carry on and have a happy holiday season this year and always.
Always remember that gift giving is not about a competition to see who can give the best or most expensive gift. It should be about showing someone you care, not about impressing them with material things. Helping others by giving or volunteering can be one of the best ways to defeat stress in your life, try it this year!
If you or someone you know might be interested in volunteering their time to do something special with our residents—please feel free to call me, Sherry Stuart. We are always looking for fun and new ideas and you just may be the one to help out with this!

Mark your calendar for our annual Christmas Open House. It is scheduled for Wednesday December 22nd from 2-4 p.m. We will have treats and lots of good eats too! Don’t miss this one, I think even Santa or Mrs. Claus will be here to join us again this year!
Until next month,
Sherry

Notes From the Resident Care Coordinator

Seniors and Falls: Myth or Fact?
If you or a loved one has taken a fall - or if the possibility of falling is something that worries you - you are not alone. Older adults put falls near the top of the list of things to worry about. But there are steps you can take to reduce the risk, and the first step is to know the basics!

Myth #1: The topic of falls isn't an important issue for me. If I fall, I just get up.

Fact: Each year, one in three seniors experiences a fall serious enough to require medical attention. Falls lead to hip fractures and other serious injuries, and are the leading cause of death due to injury.

Myth #2: Falls are just a part of growing older, and I can't do anything about that.

Fact: Some of the changes of aging do increase the risk of falling. Most older adults will experience problems with their eyesight, sense of balance, mobility, bone structure and reflexes. Medical conditions such as stroke, diabetes and Parkinson's disease also increase the risk. But there is much you can do to protect against falling.

Myth #3: So long as I stick close to home, I can avoid falling.

Fact: Over half of all falls take place right in the person's home! One of the most important steps you can take to cut your fall risk is to do a regular home safety inspection. Look for hazards, such as rough floor surfaces, clutter, throw rugs, and poor lighting. Make simple home Modifications, such as grab bars in the bathroom, a second handrail on stairs, and non-slip paint on outdoor steps

Myth #4: If I have experienced a fall, the best way to prevent falling again is to sit down most of the time and avoid physical activity.

Fact: This may be the biggest myth of all when it comes to protecting against falls! The truth is, inactivity results in decreased energy, muscle tone and alertness which actually increase the risk.

Myth #5: Muscle strength and flexibility, once lost, can never be regained.

Fact: Even if you've been a "couch potato" your whole life, beginning an exercise program now will benefit you in many ways-not the least of which is protecting against falls. Ask your healthcare provider about a fall prevention exercise plan that's right for you.

Myth #6: Medications can't increase the risk of falling.
Fact: Many medications help reduce falls by treating conditions that increase a person's risk of falling (such as arthritis, osteoporosis and low blood pressure). But side effects of some drugs can also put us at greater risk of falling. Discuss any dizziness, fatigue, confusion
r weakness with your healthcare provider.

Myth #7: If I am worried about the fall risk of a parent, spouse or other older adult, I shouldn't bring it up because it might hurt their feelings. And it's none of my business!

Fact: The reality is, helping your loved one or friend reduce the risk of falling is a caring act that can help him or her maintain the highest degree of independence possible. Let the person know that you fully support this important goal. Stay safe!

Merry Christmas!
Ruth
(c)2008 IlluminAge Communication Partners

Nancy’s Welcome Mats & Neighborly Chats

At The Paragon we believe ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING… Each day, we have dozens of reasons to give thanks. Yet we generally take these things for granted and fail to see them as precious items to be cherished. Of course, when any one of them is taken from us, even temporarily, we take notice. But, day in and day out, we rarely consider our blessings.

Why am I making such a big fuss about this? It’s simple. When you focus on gratitude and other positive emotions, you feel better and are more relaxed, more creative and more productive. You also have a positive influence on those around you.

Here, then, are a few things you can do to cultivate an “attitude of gratitude” in your life:

1) Think about your blessings daily. The key is to develop a habit of focusing on things you are grateful for. Put a note on your bathroom mirror or carry a card in your wallet or purse with the message, “Count Your Blessings.” Set aside time each to reflect on how fortunate you are. This isn’t a time-consuming chore, and you’ll be amazed at the results!

2) Verbalize your gratitude. During conversations at work and at home, express your appreciation for all of the wonderful things and people in your life. We live in a country that allows you freedom of expression and the right to pursue your dreams, tell others how much you appreciate that.

3) Shift the focus away from difficulties. When problems arise and you’ve done all you can to remedy them, train your mind to bring your attention back to your blessings. This helps you to keep things in perspective-- e.g. recognizing that your health and basic necessities in life are more important than anything.

4) Lift others in need. One of the best ways to use your gifts (health, energy, attitude, etc.) is to share them with others who are having a rough time. Can you lend a helping hand to a friend, relative or other person in your community? Merely spending time with someone in need or giving a few words of encouragement can make a tremendous difference to that person, while helping you to develop a deeper sense of gratitude about how well-off you are. It costs you nothing to be grateful and appreciative, yet it has a considerable impact on the quality of your life. So, don’t waste another minute. Every day, reflect on the priceless gifts you’ve been enjoying. Openly share your gratitude with others.

And, the next time somebody asks if anything great happened to you today, you’ll have plenty to say!

Staff Appreciation

As we approach the season of giving, it is important that each resident and family member understand that The Paragon staff members and volunteers are here to make each resident’s life better and easier.

Although it is a nice gesture, we believe that it is in the best interest of all to not allow tipping of the staff or volunteers of The Paragon. They have been instructed that it is against our policy for them to accept tips for services rendered.

When a staff member or volunteer has been particularly helpful and courteous, it is appropriate for you to thank the individual and, if you wish, inform me of the exemplary nature of their service.

In lieu of gratuities, you may donate to the staff appreciation fund which benefits all employees. We know that each staff member is grateful for these gifts.

Let’s all be thankful for all of the wonderful things we enjoy, living in the greatest country on earth.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Nancy

Note From Nancy

A Note From Nancy: I want to take this time to thank those who were responsible for such a lovely 10 year anniversary open house and fun Halloween Family Night. We haven't set a date—but be assured that we will let everyone know in plenty of time to get it on your calendar.

Thank you for all the support and kind words that you give us! This dish can be served with entrée or as a dessert. I have to say—it’s wonderful!!

Sweet Potato Crisp
1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup dried cranberries
*1 can (40 oz) cut sweet potatoes, drained 3 Tbsp flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 Tbsp brown sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 3 Tbsp butter
1 cup chopped apples 3 cups honey-flavored oat cluster cereal flakes

Preheat oven to 350°. Don’t you agree? The meal is always good but the best part of the holiday season is being able to spend time with your loved ones. Let’s all be thankful for even the small things that we encounter in our lifetime, especially your family. Hold it dear, family and friends are most important. I hope that each of you have a peaceful and very Happy Thanksgiving this year.

I want thank you for the positive responses that I received on the annual activities program surveys. Thank you for all the nice compliments that each of you have given me. As always, if any of us in any department can make your stay any more comfortable, please let us know. We are all here to make this as much your home as we possibly can.

We sure had an eventful month in October! I want to take this time to mention one of our largest events —we celebrated our ten year anniversary with an Open House on Thursday October 21st from 3-5 p.m. Guests enjoyed a tasteful assortment of finger foods as Tom Hamilton played the piano. Other activities included a horse & buggy ride on Wednesday October 20th., Western Day with music provided by Clif Duckworth on Friday the 22nd, First Christian Church Trick-or-treaters came on the 27th, and our annual Halloween Family night was held on Thursday the 28th.

Our upcoming events in November include—A Veterans Day Program with Sam Beeny on Monday November 8th at 1:30, making personal hygiene bags for our soldiers on the 12th, and a lunch out at a restaurant of the residents choice.

Our next Resident Town Meeting will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday November 29th. See you there.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Sherry

Notes from the Resident Care Coordinator

Be Prepared!

In January 2009, our community had something that none of us had ever experienced before—a devastating ice storm. I hope that each and everyone of us never have to go through that again!

Hence the reason for this article—winter is coming and we all need to be ready. That ice storm taught us some very important lessons—just like Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts we need to be prepared!

Please ask your family members to supply you with the following items:
Warm Socks
Extra Blankets
Pillows
Sweaters
Warm clothes

Every resident should have a battery operated lantern in their suite.

If you or your family member purchase a space heater for your suite, please let us know. We have to be very careful about space heaters—the only ones that can be used in the building are those that if it’s knocked over, it will automatically shut off. The others could very easily put everyone in harms way. Also remember—NO CANDLES!

With all the reports that we hear about the Flu etc. we want to take this time to reiterate how important it is to take every precaution necessary. All flu viruses spread from person to person thru

personal contact. People catch the flu by touching someone else or an object that is infected and then touching their mouths or noses before washing their hands, flu viruses can also spread by coughing and sneezing.

Practice good hygiene etiquette. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands frequently—or use an alcohol based hand sanitize, like the one that we provide on the salon’s round table. We can never be too cautious!

I know that I have written on this subject many times—but we need to be reminded daily to take these important precautions.
Until Next Month,
Ruth

Nancy's Welcome Mats & Neighborly Chats

Even though it’s September we are still experiencing some HOT days! The July and August heat wave was awful! Soon (hopefully) we can begin looking forward to cool days and even cooler nights.

It’s hard to believe that on September 20th, The Paragon will celebrate its 10th anniversary! Also in September the week of 12th—18th is Assisted Living Week. There are several events that have been planned so be sure to check your calendar.

We want each of our residents to feel at home and at ease while living at The Paragon.

We have 6 key areas that the staff of The Paragon strive daily to give to each of our residents.
They are . . .

Dignity – here you will find a placed that handles the uncertainly of change, while enriching lives with independence. We hope that you think that The Paragon has created a community that’s really more an extension of your family.

Independence – Do you like to sleep in or take time to read alone in the mornings?
security and comfort.

Or maybe you prefer an early morning walk and breakfast with friends. No matter what your choose, The Paragon can help maximize your independence of 24-hour assistance. My, how time really does fly when you’re having fun! Hopefully, September will put an end to our hot, sticky, and hazy summer. We can finally begin to look forward to cooler weather. Autumn will officially begin on September 22nd. This is my favorite season. I enjoy the changing of the fall colors. This month also marks our ten year anniversary of the opening of The Paragon.
These next couple of months will be a perfect time to go on outings or trips before it turns too cold. Let’s start thinking about where our next adventure will be!
The week of September 12th-18th is National Assisted Living Week. As you will notice we have a few special or different activities planned during that week to celebrate. I encourage each of you to come join the fun. Just to name a couple of these specialty activities, we have included a Health Fair sponsored by Wellington Park of Owensboro on the 14th beginning at 1:30. Also on the 16th, Town and Country Florist is coming to do a flower arranging workshop. On Monday September 20th following National Assisted Living Week we have rescheduled our trip to Carolyn's place at the lake for a cookout and a pontoon ride. Thirteen residents signed up for this outing before when we had to cancel and I hope to see that number again. Make sure to mark these dates on your calendar!
Just a little reminder about your recyclable items, we have a container for aluminum cans in the Ice Cream Parlor. Also, if you would continue to put your newspapers beside your trash can the RA’s will pick those up for recycling. This is our way of giving back to our community. Thanks so much in advance for your cooperation.
Until next month,
Sherry

Notes From The Resident Care Coordinator

This article was first printed in 2007—and we thought that it is worth repeating.

TIPS FOR LIVING WELL

Influenza is a highly infectious viral illness occurring in winter months (October to March). The “flu season”
usually begins in November, peaks in late December or January, and is typically over in March. Because it takes two weeks to develop the immunity provided by the vaccine, the flu vaccine is given October through November. Persons of any age with chronic conditions that increase their risk of complications from influenza should be immunized. An abrupt onset of fever, chills, myalgia, headache, severe and persistent malaise, eye pain, light sensitivity and substernal burning of the chest characterize uncomplicated influenza. Respiratory symptoms include a non-productive cough, sore throat and rhinitis.

Influenza is highly contagious, with an attack rate of 10% to 20% from the day before symptoms began through approximately 5 days after onset in adults. It is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Contaminated hands are a frequent source of transmission and infection. It is important to wash hands frequently.

Hopefully no one reading this will experience influenza because they will have the immunization. But if you should develop influenza and not be at high-risk for complications there are a few general steps to speed recovery and protect others.

Stay in your suite to protect others from infection.
Get plenty of rest.
Drink plenty of liquids.
Do not drink alcohol or use tobacco products.
Consider over-the-counter medications to relieve the symptoms.
Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
Wash hands frequently.

For your convenience, we will be scheduling The Hopkins County Health Department again this year to give “Flu Shots” at The Paragon. The date and times will be published in the October newsletter. We will also post the time and date on the bulletin board.

We will be getting our “Flu Shot” and hope you will to!

Ruth

News From The Ice Cream Parlor

The month of August makes me think of getting the children ready to go back to school. It’s time to get back to the regularly scheduled days of school and/or work. For some, though, those days never stopped except for maybe a week of vacation, such as myself.
As I reflect on the years past I can’t help but think of the relationships that have developed with residents, family members and even a few new staff members. Many of the residents are still here when I joined the Paragon team three years ago. Regretfully several have either passed away or moved. I am glad to have been given the chance to meet each and every one of these residents and look forward to a continued relationship of making fun and new memories.
A couple of our residents have requested to bring back the bell choir. In doing so, I’m going to need a couple more ringers - so ask your friends and neighbors if they might want to join us in bell choir.
We have a fun and eventful month planned. Please take notice of your monthly calendar enclosed in this newsletter and mark your favorite activities. We will be going out for lunch a couple of times this month, so pay attention to those dates. On Friday August 27 at 6 p.m., we are having a special guest, Cliff Duckworth. He will be providing entertainment for that evening. It’s not a family night, but family and friends are welcome to come and join us. There will not be any invitations sent out for this event. This is our western day so come dressed in your western attire! We will have the popcorn popping in the dining room before the music starts. We look forward to seeing you there.
While looking at the calendar—do you realize that August is the only month of the year that isn’t home to a major holiday?
Until next month,
Sherry

The Kitchen Korner

Creamy Layered Peach Squares

What You Need
2 cups Honey Maid Graham Cracker Crumbs
1/2 cup Sugar, divided
1 tub (8 oz.) I remember my school days- we didn’t go back to school until after Labor Day—as is life, things sure change!

In thinking about what to share with you in this article, I decided that today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger.

I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know. Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for them and how much they mean to me.

Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me. Join me and take time to smile, love and laugh—life is too short to worry—

We continually asked our residents to share a short story or poem that we can put in our newsletter to share with our readers.

Lois Clark took us up on our invitation! She gave us a clipping that was found among her husband’s mother papers and she would like to share.
Eternity
A Hundred Years Ahead
By Walt Huntley
Tell me, friend, what will it matter,
Say a hundred years from now,
If you owned ten thousand acres
Or just one old broken plow;
If you bought your suits in Paris
And your shoes in Italy,
Or your clothes were made in patches
As the bed quilts used to be;
Whether you lived in a mansion
With the finest broadlooms laid,
If you had a private chauffeur,
Butler, cook, a nurse and maid,
Or if you lived in a cottage
With your health gone on the skids,
Out of work and out of money,
Just your wife and seven kids?
But there’s more to life than livin’,
More for those who will believe,
More in store laid up in heaven
If the Savior we receive.
Whether we are lost forever
Or to Jesus here we bow,
This is what will make the difference
In a hundred years from now.

Notes From The Resident Care Coordiator

Many people think that today's faster pace in health care leaves no time for asking questions--no time for just talking with your doctor or other provider. But the truth and good communication is more important than ever before. Why? Because the focus today is on a team approach. You, as the patient, need to play an active role. The better you understand your options, the smarter your choices will be. The clearer you are about your wishes, the easier it is for your care team to give you the care you want.
Everyone Benefits
Have you heard about your right to give or refuse your informed consent to treatment? This just means your provider must give you the facts about your care firsthand then let you decide what path to take. The "facts" include:
→What's wrong with me?
→What's the outlook for the future?
→What does my doctor recommend?
→What are the risks and benefits in doing that?
→What are the other options open to me and their risks and benefits?
And don't forget: clear communication about your care helps everyone. You need the facts so you can decide what's best for you. Your doctor and other providers need to know where you stand, so they can carry out your plan of care.

Getting Ready
Clear communication doesn't just happen. It takes some time and effort. For example, here are some things you can do to get ready for your next doctor's appointment or care conference:
→If you use a hearing aid, make sure you have it with you.
→Write down your questions or concerns ahead of time.
→If you have an advance directive or values statement your doctor doesn't know about, be sure to take a copy with you.
→For an especially important appointment, think about asking a close relative or friend to go along. Two sets of ears are often better than one.

The Patient's Role
If you're like most people, talking about your own care can be hard. You might be more inclined to avoid the subject, or you might be worrying about what to do or what will happen. You probably can't change that. But focusing on your role can help.

Remember?
→Try to relax, listen, and concentrate. →Take in as much as you can of what your provider is telling you.
→Give yourself time. Don't feel rushed to make a quick decision. You have the right to think things over, to talk them over, before you choose which path is best for you.
→Ask questions. If you don't understand something, say so. Getting answers to your questions helps everyone.
This will help you participate fully in your care-which is truly a "team effort."

Until next month,
Ruth Barnett
Resident Care Coordinator

(c)2008 IlluminAge Communication Partners

Nancy's Welcome Mats & Neighborly Chats

Happy Independence Day!

This month instead of an article from me, I have asked Mark Lee, President of The Paragon, to inform you about House Bill #444.
Stay cool—Until next month,
God Bless you,
Nancy

At the request of our state trade association, Kentucky Assisted Living Facilities Association (KALFA), House Bill 444 was introduced by Representative Susan Westrom (Lexington) on February 16. It passed both the House and the Senate unanimously, and Governor Beshear signed it on March 30. The new law takes effect on July 15. The changes to the law are very significant, and positively impact seniors residing in assisted living communities across the Commonwealth.

Some of the highlights are:
Now medications may be stored in a manner requested in writing by the resident or resident’s designee and that is permitted by the assisted living community’s policies. Current law has mandated that the resident always have access to his or her medications. This important change will permit, but not require, a resident or the resident’s representative to ask The Paragon to retain the key to the medication drawer in the apartment, rather than the resident having it. If a resident is concerned about forgetting whether he or she took medications at a given time and, as a result, perhaps being at risk of mistakenly over-medicating, the most appropriate solution may be to request that The Paragon retain the key and assist at the appointed times.

Additionally, if medications are in unit dose packaging or are placed in a pill organizer by the resident, or a designated representative or licensed health care professional not affiliated with the assisted living community (usually a pharmacy), our staff members will be able to remove the medication and hand it to the resident. Resident Assistants will also be able to apply over-the-counter lotions and ointments. They will be able to guide a resident’s hand, as well as steady it, when the resident is self-administering medications.Prior to the new law, staff members could only steady the hand, not guide it.

We will have copies of the changes to the law available if you would like to read them for yourself. I drafted the bill and worked with a small group of other assisted living leaders across the state to accomplish this much-needed re-write of Kentucky’s assisted living statute. We also worked closely with the Department for Aging and Independent Living in Frankfort to develop changes to the regulations necessitated by the new law. Those changes have been filed but won’t take effect until September. Between now and then, we will continue getting more details to you. We believe that these changes will benefit many residents of The Paragon.

The Kitchen Korner

Summer is definitely here! July is the time for outdoor summer fun, festivals, vacations, swimming, fireworks, cookouts and to celebrate our freedom. So get out of your suites and let’s have some fun this month! Did you know that this month is also considered the half way point of 2010? Time really does fly when you’re having fun!
I am interested in knowing why you are proud to be an American. If you would please stop by the Ice Cream Parlor and pick up your paper to finish the sentence, “ I’m proud to be an American because….. _” I would like to post these on our bulletin board and maybe even in next months’ newsletter.
I am really excited about our Paragon quilt that is in the making! This is a project that I have wanted to get started since I came on board at The Paragon. It makes me so happy to see all the residents that have shown interest in this project. A big “Thank you” goes out to Linda Scott for helping get this project started.
The ladies from Peebles are coming back again this year for a style show! The show is scheduled for July 15th at 3:30. Store models will be in the Dogwood Room to model their clothing. Please encourage your family and friends to come and join us, refreshments will be served. The Peebles representative will be informing the residents, guests and staff about an incentive program to receive a percentage off items in their store.
Our next Resident Town Meeting is scheduled for July 26th at 11 a.m. in the Dogwood Room. We will update you on any Paragon news and we would appreciate it if you would voice any concerns you may have during that time.
I hope each of you have a safe and happy July. I hope this helps you to better understand the purpose of assisted living.

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living communities are for people needing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) but wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Assisted living exists to bridge the gap between independent living and nursing homes. Assisted living facilities offer help with ADLs such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with medications.

The Paragon of Madisonville as well as most assisted living communities creates a service plan or functional needs assessment (FNA) for each individual resident upon move-in. The FNA details the personalized services required or the assistance requested by the resident. We update this plan quarterly to assure that our residents receive the appropriate care as his or her condition changes.

How Does an Assisted Living Community Differ from a Nursing Home?

Quite simply, nursing homes are designed to care for very frail & very sick people that are not able to care for themselves and have numerous health care requirements that an assisted living communities cannot provide..

In writing this article, I began to recall why many of our resident's moved to The Paragon of Madisonville. Quite simply, The Paragon of Madisonville is a worry-free community. Our residents are free of all those household worries such as cooking, cleaning, maintenance of a home and upkeep of the grounds. We provide three meals daily and weekly housekeeping service. We even have the added convenience of providing scheduled transportation and stock personal care items in a general store.

Our resident’s enjoy going shopping, having lunch outside The Paragon, attending functions at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts, program and plays at the Badgett Playhouse in Grande Rivers and many more wonderful opportunities. As one of our resident’s said, “living at The Paragon is like being on a cruise without the water!”

We at The Paragon of Madisonville strive very hard to help our resident and family members feel satisfied and as comfortable as possible in their surroundings

If you know someone that is interested in The Paragon, please invite them to see our lovely community for themselves and have lunch with us. I think that they will be pleasantly surprised!

Wishing all the father’s reading our newsletter a very Happy Father’s Day!
God Bless you,
Nancy, Community Director

The Kitchen Korner

As always, we will continue to serve some of your favorites, but would love to hear from you and see what you would enjoy seeing on the menu. You won’t want to miss this exciting adventure!
On June 25th we are go- ing back to Grand Rivers to the Badgett Playhouse for “The Fabulous Fifties Show.”

And last, but not least, I want to mention to our residents about our cookout on June 29th for lunch. This will be our Americana theme to honor Flag Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, so residents come dressed in your red, white, and blue!

This month marks the one year anniversary of the walking club. I’ve not seen very many out walking during these times and I hope to get this exercise program going again. So get out of those suites, put your walking shoes on and let’s go walking again! Assisted living communities in Kentucky encourage clients (residents) to bring their own furniture, furnishings and keepsakes.

What determines the cost of living in an assisted living community?

The cost of living in an assisted living community usually will depend on the size/type of your living unit, assistance you need and any additional services you might request. The assisted living community is required to disclose all available services and fees, so you can make an informed decision.

Are the assisted living community employees required to be trained?

Yes. Kentucky law requires employees to be trained on a number of key topics.

Do assisted living communities conduct criminal record checks on their employees?

Yes. Assisted living communities are required to conduct criminal record checks on employee applicants. Many also voluntarily ensure that no employee applicants are listed on Kentucky’s nurse aid abuse registry.

Will I ever have to move out of the assisted living community?

Kentucky law required that a client (resident) must be ambulatory or be mobile non-ambulatory, such as being able to get around with a walker or in a wheelchair without assistance.

Any client who needs health care service must directly arrange to receive those services from an outside agency or individual, or otherwise be required to move out of the assisted living community.

In addition, any client who poses a danger to self or others must move out. Last, a client who is unable to continue paying for services must be given at least a 30-day notice by the assisted living community before being required to move out. An assisted living community that issues a move-out notice must have provisions for assisting the client in finding appropriate living arrangements prior to the actual move-out date.

This concludes the article (s) from Providing Choice. If you would like a copy of this publication, please let us know.

Until next month . . . This article is dedicated to those volunteers with our sincere thanks.
We don’t often have a chance to show appreciation to some of the volunteers who cross the threshold of our doors and come into the lives of our Paragon residents and staff. Therefore, it’s time to express our gratitude to the people who volunteer their time to help the activities and events program at The Paragon of Madisonville. These volunteers work in many different areas, such as conducting Sunday school, devotional services, playing music or singing, calling Bingo, conducting educational classes, pet therapy and various crafts.
Our volunteers are indispensable, and we are so thankful for all that they do. Even though every staff person at The Paragon strives to make sure our residents achieve the most out of every day, it takes the time of our devoted volunteers to fulfill our commitment to our residents. We are so very blessed to have these volunteers and it’s a privilege to honor them.

Do you enjoy spending time with seniors? Do you have talents you like sharing with others? We are always looking for people to spend one hour a week or more with our residents. If you have a favorite hobby or talent you would like to share, or just want to enjoy a glass of iced tea and good conversation with some very interesting people, become a volunteer today.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at The Paragon, please call Sherry at (270) 824-9006. Giving of your time and your heart can be the most rewarding thing you ever do.
On behalf of the residents and staff of The Paragon, thank you and God Bless,
Nancy

Whether we're moms, daughters, grandmothers, or all of the above, Mother's Day holds a special place in our hearts. Sure, birthdays are a chance to show our appreciation, but Mother's Day is something different altogether. It's about loving mom for mothering us. It's about loving mom for disciplining us, pushing us, and loving us. It's about loving your children because they are yours. It's about celebrating the very idea of motherhood. In honor of that, share your favorite memories of Mother's Days past and present with family and friends.

Happy Mother's Day!

May 9, 2010

The Kitchen Korner

Spring is officially here! I would like to begin with saying a job well done to all of our staff. Hooray -we received an A+ on our state survey!

A big round of applause goes to our Paragon bowling team for raising $400 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kid’s Sake! The Paragon team included Debbie Gordon, Sherry Stuart, Cara Sizemore, Brandi Collins, Kristen Davis, and Crystal Hill.

As always, I invite each of you to come and check out our daily activities. We always have something for everyone, and if for some reason you have a favorite activity that is not on the calendar, please let me know and we will work together to get it listed. I am always open to ideas and suggestions, so let’s talk!

Also just a reminder for our residents– our weekly calendars are located on the round table in the front salon. New calendars come out each Sunday. Please be sure to look at it as they may be different than your monthly calendar due to other scheduling or cancellations.

Now let’s talk about some of our upcoming events for this month. A few of the residents were discussing going on a picnic at the city park. Everyone seemed to be very interested at the time of discussion so watch your calendars for the date! Also, I have talked with our hairdresser, Carolyn Clayton, and she has graciously invited us to the lake for a picnic and a pontoon boat ride! Next, we are planning to put on some quilting dates. Lynda Scott is a part-time employee at the Paragon and she is going to volunteer to show us a little bit about it. Since being her, I have always wanted to make a Paragon quilt!

Together we could make every square unique. Of course, if you needed a pair of helping hands that’s what the staff are here for. We can make it work, if there’s a will there’s a way!!

May is Physical Fitness and Sports month, so let’s be healthy and stay active! I am hoping to see more of you out and about these next few months. Even if you don’t participate in activities, we would love for you to come and observe and talk with us. Socialization promotes good health! I will close with saying, enjoy life to the fullest and together we can make it fun!
Until next month,

Sherry

Notes From Ruth Barnett

Tis the season for allergies!

This year, it has been reported that the pollen count is the worst it has been in years!

Allergies are very common, affecting about 20% of the population. When the body's immune system reacts to a normal, harmless substance (like pollen, for example) by creating an antigen to fight it, that's an allergy.
Types
There are so many different types of grasses, trees and plants that cause allergies that it can be hard to narrow down a specific allergy. Pollen and ragweed are two of the most common causes of season allergies, but any grasses, weeds and trees can cause them.

A person can be allergic to just pollen or some other allergen like ragweed, or he can be allergic to more than one, or several.
Symptoms
Sometimes the symptoms of seasonal allergies are hard to distinguish from symptoms of a cold. In fact, some people might think they have a cold or allergies, when in fact they have the other. People who get colds frequently in the spring or fall often are suffering from seasonal allergies instead of colds.
Runny nose, stuffy nose, watery and itchy eyes, coughing, sneezing, itchy throat, difficulty sleeping and even an inability to taste or smell as normal are symptoms of seasonal allergies

Causes/Risk Factors
With seasonal allergies, the body's immune system recognizes the inhaled substance as something dangerous like a virus or other bacteria and tries to flush it out, which causes the symptoms. Immunoglobulin antibodies are released, which release histamine and other chemicals. These chemicals cause the coughing, sneezing, nose running and eye watering designed to
flush those foreign bodies away.

Of those who do have seasonal allergies, some parts of the country and
locations tend to cause more symptoms than other, depending on what their particular allergy is to, and the kinds of grasses, trees and plants common in that area.
Treatment
Minimizing exposure to allergens is the best course of action, like staying in a climate-controlled environment when allergens are high and avoiding being outdoors between 5 and 10 a.m. when pollen counts are at their peak. Air-conditioned surroundings can help filter out many airborne allergens.

Seasonal allergies are often treated with over-the-counter and prescription antihistamines and decongestants,
nasal corticosteroids, and sometimes a 3 to 5 year course of allergy shots.

Until Next Month!
Ruth

Nancy's Welcome Mats

Last year I shared a wonderful and inspirational story that I thought was worth repeating. It read:
“It’s the thing about caring for people. They get into your life, sometimes briefly, and manage to become a part of who you are. Not all people, but those special individuals who arrive unexpectedly and linger there. How does it happen? They are the ones who, the first time you meet them, touch you in such a way that they leave an imprint on your heart. They are the people you look for and hope to meet along the way. They make the journey easier. Some become close friends and share everyday happenings in your life. Others just pass through leaving behind bits and pieces of who they are. Then there are those who are always there, but off in the distance somewhere within reach whenever you need them. You may only see them once in awhile, but when you do you are made better, lifted up, energized by the time you shared with them.”

After reading this, I thought about the many people in my life who fit into this group. I realized how many people I depend on each day, sometimes just to get through it! I am blessed beyond measure. It also brought up this question...“Am I one of those people?” Wouldn’t it be great if we could become more like the people we personally depend on?

Look at the people around you that you love and depend on daily. Make a list of all of the qualities they possess that you admire and value. Now, take that same list and ask yourself, “Am I as good a person?” and “Whose list am I on?”

Our Paragon residents and families mean so much to us. That major catastrophe will be an event that no one will forget! I do believe that everyone learned some kind of lesson during those trying times and probably even learned more about someone you may not have known very well. One of the good things that I saw happen was that people opened their hearts and their doors without question to help someone else. Every so often we should take time out of our busy schedules to count our blessings and appreciate even the small things we take for granted.
We all should pay more attention to our lives, taking pleasure from even the smallest things that are not so obvious at first. Some of these may be as small as making someone smile, a sunset, a visit from a friend, or even a compliment. Our lives sometimes get so overwhelmed with everyday living and sometimes making sacrifices to get by, we forget to appreciate the happy things we are so fortunate to have. I hope your new year will be a safe, happy, and healthy one.
It’s that time again to select your Valentine King and Queen for 2010 . Don’t forget to cast your vote for who you want. Our ballot box is located in the sun room. You may put one vote in per day. Everyone can vote, this includes staff, residents, guests, and families, but please only vote for the residents.
Ballots will be counted on February 10th. Our King and Queen of 2010 will be announced at our Valentine’s party, Friday February 12th at 3:00 p.m.

Until next month,

Sherry
Several Announcements:

* Welcome to our newest resident - Ms. Jean Space
* Resident POM Anniversary - Nine years - Symala Roa
* January 28, the residents prepared hygiene kits for Haiti victims
* Winner of the first "crazy hat day" was Symala Rao. Participating reswidents and staff designed and decorated hats and wore their work of art throughout the day.
* Congratulations to James and Luella Burden who celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on January 7th.

Residents can receive assistance with activities
of daily living (ADL’s), as well as assistance with medications.

Even though our residents enjoy bingo, we offer so many other events, such as attending special programs at The Glema Mahr Center, going to Pennyrile State Park for bingo and lunch, weekly trips the Senior Citizens Center, to the mall and bank, van rides, enjoying crafts, group outings spanning from Wal-Mart to a night at the theater.

If you have a loved one, family member or friend that would be interested in learning more about assisted living, please have them contact The Paragon at (270) 824-9006.
Until next month .

Nancy's Welcome Mats

First I wish each of you a very happy and healthy New Year - 2010! I pray that it will be a year filled with peace and good health with each day.

I want to thank residents, family, friends and staff, who made our annual Christmas Open House such a success. We were so happy to see so many of our family and friends. I also want to personally thank Danny & Charlotte Fireline for spending Christmas Eve with our residents with cookies and hot chocolate while sharing the story of Christmas. I know that our residents appreciated the time that they took to be with them.

I also want to take this time to thank those of you who contributed to the Staff Appreciation fund. Because of these generous gifts, we were able to purchase chamber checks and gift cards for each member of The Paragon staff. I want to personally express my appreciation for recognizing them. It means so much to our staff to be remembered.

I hope that you know what a blessing it is to have an assisted living community like The Paragon in Madisonville. It’s a wonderful place to live! The Paragon is designed for senior adults who wish to maintain their independent lifestyle with the security of knowing that if the need arises for some additional assistance, we are there. Living at The Paragon is a wonderful opportunity to be reunited with old friends and the opportunity to meet new friends.

We have so much to look forward to in this New Year at The Paragon. Sherry is already planning new destinations to see, new restaurants to try along with all the daily activities she plans for all to enjoy. She would, however, appreciated any ideas from family members and friends of places to go,to go, what to see, where to eat, etc. Please don’t hesitate to let her know.

God bless,
Nancy

News From The Ice Cream Parlor

The Christmas holiday has come to an end and we’ve started yet another new year.
A special “thank you” goes out to Santa Clause, AKA, Ben Cooper! At least this year he had boots on, however they were mismatched in color! Also to Pro-care and Care Tenders for providing some of the tasty treats.
I want to remind you about the use of our common areas at The Paragon Of Madisonville. These areas are primarily for use by residents, families, and their invited guests. We encourage residents to enjoy all areas of the building, including the main foyer, dining room, ice cream parlor, Dogwood Room, computer/card room, and private dining room.
2. No smoking is permitted in The Paragon, which includes the guest restrooms.

Voting for the 2010 Valentine King & Queen will be coming soon. Here are just a few:

Myth: Your body and brain shut down for rest and relaxation when you sleep.

FACT: Some physiologic processes actually become more active when you sleep; for example, increase of activity of the brain’s pathways for learning and memory. No evidence of any major organs including the brain, shuts down during sleep.

Myth: Worry is the main cause of insomnia.

FACT: Worry can cause a short bout of insomnia, but a persistent inability to fall asleep or stay asleep can be caused by various medications, sleep disorders, and health problems such as depression, anxiety, asthma, or arthritis.

Myth: If you’re excessively tired during the day, extra sleep at night is the cure.

FACT: With sleep, quality is as important as quantity. If the quality of sleep is poor, even sleeping 8 to 9 hours won’t refresh you.

Myth: Your body adjusts quickly to different sleep schedules.

FACT: Most people can reset their biological clock by only 1 to 2 hours per day. It can take more than a week to adjust to a dramatic change in you sleep-

Wake cycle, as happens when you travel across several time zones or switch from working days to working nights.

Myth: Sleeping more on the weekends can help you make up for sleep lost during the week.

FACT: Sleeping in can help ease part of a sleep debt, but it won’t erase it completely, and it won’t affect performance impaired during the week because of inadequate sleep. Also, sleeping in on weekends can affect your biological clock, making it harder to go to bed at the right time Sunday night-and even harder to get up early on Monday morning.

Myth: Sleeping 1 hour less per night than you need won’t affect your daytime functioning.

FACT: Even slightly less sleep can impair your ability to think clearly and respond quickly, although you may not be noticeably sleepy during the day. Not getting enough sleep alsocan compromised your cardiovascular health and immune system. If you consistently fail to get enough sleep, you'll eventually become excessively tired during the day.

I hope that you have a good nights sleep tonight and every night—with sweet dreams.
Until next month, Ruth

Nancy's Welcome Mats & Neighborly Chats

We are fast approaching the most wonderful season of the year! I just hope the new year to come will bring lots of happiness, wealth, and good health. I think I can speak for everyone when I tell you that I’ll be glad when this flu season is over. The young children seemed to be the target of the dreadful H1N1 virus. So far we haven’t heard much about the seasonal flu and I hope it stays that way! We sure don’t want it to affect any of us or our loved ones!

The holiday season is upon us, and the hustle and bustle of shopping will overcome a lot of us. Sometimes we have a tendency to get caught up in trying to figure out who is cooking what and what to buy this one, that we forget the true meaning of Christmas.

Gift giving is not supposed to be about a competition to see who can give the best or most expensive gift. It should be about showing someone you care, not about impressing them with material things. Helping others by giving or volunteering can be one of the best ways to defeat stress in your life, try it this year!

Mark your calendar for our annual Christmas Open House.

It is scheduled for Monday December 21st from 2-4 p.m. We will have treats and lots of good eats too! Don’t miss this one, I think even Santa will be here to join us again this year!

Happy Holidays,
Sherry Until next month,
Sherry

The Kitchen Korner

The staff of The Paragon recently had a “Thanksgiving” potluck luncheon and one of the hits of the day was Janet Moore’s Banana Nut Cake. When taken as directed, they’re usually safe and effective treatments for headaches and other minor aches and pains.

What can happen if I take too much medicine?
Depending on the type of pain reliever, taking larger doses than recommended can lead to serious health problems. Make sure you always read the label and follow the directions, and if you have any questions, talk with your pharmacist or health care provider.

How can I stay safe?
In general, don’t take an OTC pain reliever for more than 10 days for pain and 3 days for fever .If you have pain or fever for longer, tell your health care provider. Read the product labels carefully and don’t exceed the recommended dosages.

Many OTC medicines contain more than one type of pain reliever. For example, many cough and cold medicines and sleep aids contact acetaminophen, Check the ingredient list before you take any OTC medicine to make sure you’re not getting too much of any one medicine and avoid taking medicines that contain the same active ingredients.

If you’re over age 60; are taking prescription blood thinners such as Coumadin; have had stomach ulcers; have other bleeding problems; have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease;are taking a diuretic (water pill), talk with your doctor before using pain relievers. To be safe, always talk with your doctor about the best pain reliever for you.

If you’re taking pain relievers, drink six to eight glasses of nonalcoholic and non-caffeinated fluids per day to help flush the medicine through your kidneys unless your doctor has limited your fluid intake.

As usual—Make sure your doctor knows about all the medicines you take, including any other OTC medicines and herbal supplements. This cannot be stressed enough!

Until next month, stay healthy!
Ruth

Notes From Ruth Barnett

BE PRERPARED
Last winter we had something that none of us had ever experienced before—a devastating ice storm. I hope that each and everyone of us never has to go through that again!

Hence the reason for this article—winter is coming and we all need to be ready. Last winter taught us some very important lessons—it really caught us unprepared.

We were so lucky to be at The Paragon where we never missed a beat! We had 3 meals a day, warm common rooms and a 121 gallon diesel fueled generator that kept us warm, kept every thing going and a dedicated staff and owners to see that each resident was taken care of.

Just like Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts we need to be prepared!

Please ask your family members to supply you with the following items:
· Warm Socks
· Extra Blankets
· Pillows
· Sweaters
· Warm clothes

Every resident should have a battery operated lantern in their suite. In order to make this easier for your family members—The Paragon will purchase rechargeable battery packed lanterns—if you or your family members are interested in ordering one or more, please let us know—we can put the item on your bill. We purchased one as an example that will be displayed in The Paragon’s salon area. We will be happy to take orders– they should be less than $30 each. Just let Nancy, Janet, Sherry or me know and we will take care of it.

If you or your family member has purchased a space heater for your suite, please let us know. We have to be very careful about space heaters—the only ones that can be used in the building is one that if it’s knocked over, it will automatically shut off. The others could very easily put everyone in harms way.

Also remember—
NO CANDLES!

With all the reports that we hear about the Flu, H1N1, etc. we want to take this time to reiterate how important it is to take every

precaution necessary. All flu viruses spread from person to person thru personal contact. People catch the flu by touching someone else or an object that is infected and then touching their mouths or noses before washing their hands, flu viruses can also spread by couching and sneezing.

Until next month, here’s
wishing you a Happy & Healthy
Thanksgiving,
Ruth

The Kitchen Korner

The Kitchen Korner
Elegant Italian Cream Fudge

** What a great candy recipe for a party—just in time for the Holidays. Enjoy!! **

Ingredients6 cups sugar 1 cup butter or margarine 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tbsp vanilla 2 1/3 cups evaporated milk 3 cups nuts (pecans, walnuts, etc)
2 cups light corn syrup

Combine sugar, evaporated milk, corn syrup & salt in a 4 qt heavy saucepan. Cook over medium to low heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a soft ball stage (238°). Remove from heat & add butter without stirring. Cool to lukewarm. Add vanilla. Beat with electric mixer at slow speed until candy thickens and is very creamy. Stir in nuts quickly. Pour into 2 buttered 8½ x 4½ x 2½loaf pans, cool until firm. Remove candy from pans & wrap each loaf in foil or plastic wrap. Store in cold place.

Make this right before or right after Thanksgiving because if you can let it set for about a month it is creamier. Be prepared to stand over it while cooking. The mixture is thick and it sticks to the pan unless your spoon keeps it moving. And when you beat the lukewarm candy, let your electric mixer do the work. (note: you can also leave out all nuts and it is still a very good rich candy) ALSO NOTE THAT THOUGH THIS IS CALLED FUDGE IT IS NOT CHOCOLATE Happy Thanksgiving!
Your Paragon Kitchen Staff, Shirley, Sara, Jennifer & Kristen

News From the Ice Cream Parlor

Wow, it’s hard to believe that November is already here! It seemed like yesterday I was rushing to get Octobers calendar of events and newsletter together.
I want to thank David, Anita, Debbie, and Crystal Hill, to mention a few, for helping keep you all busy while I was away in meetings and on vacation. It’s a blessing to know that we have staff here that we can turn to in a time of need. When I asked for their help they didn’t hesitate to lend a hand.
Next, I want to say thank you to the positive response that I got back on the activities program surveys. Thanks again for all the nice compliments that each of you have given me. It just warms my heart to know that you are happy and content here at the Paragon. As always, if any of us in any department can make your stay any more comfortable, please let someone know. We are all here to make this as much like your home as we possibly can.
One of the programs I would really like to “pep up” is our walking club. I’m going to be purchasing some “Paragon Walking Club” t-shirts for each of you to earn during the upcoming months. I hope this will encourage you to get out and socialize and by all means, exercise more. I realize that some of you can walk more than others, but that doesn’t mean that you have to stay in your suites. We usually have something for everyone, or at least we try to. My goal as your Event Coordinator is for everyone here to be interested in at least one activity. I’m really happy if it’s more than one but my goal is at least one for everyone. I hope together we can make it happen. If you are one of those residents that can’t seem to find an activity for you, please come and talk to me and I feel confident that we can find something interesting for you!
Let’s take the time this year to remember our family and friends. What better time to do that than at Thanksgiving. Just being with family and friends creates laughter and happiness. Take the time to spend it with someone you love or genuinely care about and let them know how thankful you are to have them in your life. I know that we are thankful to have you in ours!
Until next month,
Sherry

Nancy's Welcome Mats

Turkey .... Stuffing .... Cranberry Sauce .... Pumpkin Pie —this is usually what comes to mind when we think of Thanksgiving. Granted the food is yummy and worth waiting for however, let’s not forget the most important feature of this holiday — being with family & friends. Family & friends, they are what makes this wonderful holiday so special, and help create those special memories. Memories .... Everyone has them and each is precious. I love being with my family, but I think my favorite remembrances are from long ago at my beloved grandmothers house, who has been gone from us for many years, but will always be remembered with so much love. Thanksgiving at her house was the best. Our family was not very big but with my parents, the aunts, uncles and cousins it seemed like an small army. My sister and I looked forward to spending the day with our cousins; we always had so much fun. Of course the very best part of the day was when MeMe (our grandmother) declared it was time to eat. The first order of business was getting seated at the kids table. Nothing special, just a couple of card tables put together with a tablecloth. Then came the food, makes my mouth water now just thinking about it. Please forgive me if I tend to sound just a bit prejudice – everyone’s grandmother is a great cook after all - but in my mind no one could cook like MeMe and our Mother.
The amount of food was crazy, as I said there were not that many of us but you’d think the entire town was there by the number of dishes on the table. A few hours later - no kidding - it was time for the famous turkey sandwiches and any other left over you might have a hankering for. Of course as they say all good things must come to an end, which meant it was time to go home. After what seemed like an eternity of good-byes we piled into our cars and headed for home. Today our family lives in different cities and one in another country and sadly we are missing some dear ones - but not in our hearts. So to all of you, no matter what your traditions may be, enjoy the day, the food, but most of all your loved ones.
Thanksgiving is about memories – remembering who we were, who we are, who we want to be; and for being grateful for all we have in our lives.

Thanksgiving is the time to feel gratitude to God for all the good things in life. It is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of fellowmen and be thankful.

Thanksgiving thoughts are the kind of thoughts that we should have all year long. For it is the folks with thankful hearts that fill you with Thanksgiving Peace that lasts the whole year through!

Have a wonderful
Thanksgiving!

God Bless each of you,
Nancy

News From The Ice Cream Parlor

Happy fall ya’ll! I hope this issue of “The Pinnacle” finds each of you healthy and in good spirits. There sure has been a lot of sicknesses in our school systems lately. I hope and pray that it doesn’t make it’s way into our community! Unfortunately cooler weather brings sicknesses such as colds and the flu. Remember to wash your hands and to use the hand sanitizer to keep down the spread of germs. Read the back cover of this newsletter for other details that can help you avoid the flu!
Fall is such a beautiful time of year, hopefully we will be able to take some fall trips to see all the beautiful autumn changes. If you have the opportunity, sit on the front porch if only to smell the autumn in the air. It won’t be long until those leaves begin to change to orange and red and then begin to fall.
I would like to take the time to say thank you to all the residents that participated in our “National Assisted Living Week” activities during the week of September 13th-19th. It is your participation that makes each activity a success. Without it my job would be awfully boring. Which brings me to yet another topic. It’s that time again to fill out those Activity Program surveys. You will get one in your mailbox and upon completion please return them to me or give them to Janet at the front desk and she will make sure to put them in my mail slot. These surveys help me to recognize any areas that may need improvement and also let me know any suggestions that you may have. Thank you in advance for all of your cooperation.
Our annual Halloween Family night is planned for Monday October 26th at 5p.m. Come dressed in your costume. Best dressed will win a $25 Wal-Mart gift card. Music and lots of laughs will be provided during our meal. Mark you calendars now for this exciting night, you won’t want to miss this one! Please RSVP by Thursday October 22nd at 4 p.m. to ensure proper seating.
Until next month,
Sherry

The Kitchen Korner

The Kitchen Korner

Fall is in the air– and the entertaining season is approaching. The BMA report 'The prevention and treatment of viral respiratory disorders' states that simple measures like hand washing and not coughing and sneezing over people, will help prevent the spread of infection in the event of a major outbreak of flu.

We are providing a checklist of simple measures for you to follow, for example:
—Wash hands - especially before and after preparing food and after using the toilet. — Alcohol gel - this can be used as an alternative to hand washing with soap and water-The Paragon supplies hand sanitizer on the front table to be used before every meal.— Clean surfaces thoroughly viruses can survive for up to two days or more so it is important to clean surfaces.
— Be aware that viruses are easily transmitted via surfaces such as handrails, newspapers and keyboards, it is therefore important to wash hands regularly. Use disposable (paper) tissues - this allows for the easy disposal of potential infectious materials.
—Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze - droplets produced by coughing and sneezing that come into contact with another person can transmit infection. - Make sure you wash your hands after covering your mouth with your hand when coughing and sneezing.
—Get vaccinated if you are in a high risk group- over 65 year olds and people with chronic illnesses which make them at risk should make sure they get vaccinated against flu, GPs can advise their patients about this.

"It is alarming how many people do not follow basic hygiene rules like washing their hands after going to the toilet or covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Remember, if children don't see their parents following these simple rules it is unlikely they will get into the habit of following them either.

"In the event of a major outbreak of flu these simple measures will be an important factor in reducing the spread of infection. These basic hygiene practices must become second nature to everyone." Respiratory viruses are extremely common worldwide. Although the majority of patients experience mild symptoms, respiratory viruses cause illness and even death in certain groups or populations. Viruses are easily transmitted, especially in areas where there are large numbers of people in close proximity, such as on public transport, school or busy shopping centers. In an age where global travel is becoming easier and more accessible, air travel can significantly accelerate the pandemic spread of infections such as influenza. Reducing the spread of droplets carrying the virus by covering the mouth and nose is an
effective preventative measure.

The Hopkins County Health Department will give “Flu Shots” at The Paragon on Tuesday October 6 at 1 p.m. We will also post the time and date on the bulletin board.

We’re getting our “Flu Shot” and hope you will to! On crisp cool days of autumn, I remember riding my bike with my friends in the neighborhood, and occasionally we would pick up leaves and take to school to share the shapes and colors with our classmates.

Choosing love, joy, and oneness with God each day often reminds me of childhood bike rides. It can take a bit of work to get going at first. You can even feel like you are pushing your bike up a steep hill full of problems, work, and worldly concerns. Once you get going, however, you find that the ride becomes easier and easier. Soon you feel like you are flying along without even having to pedal at all. Soon you feel wind blowing in your face, joy filling up your heart, and love radiating from your soul. You find yourself laughing more, smiling more, and singing more. You find yourself sharing more, giving more, and helping more. You find yourself loving others, spreading joy, and living the way that God meant for you to live. You find yourself realizing that God is love, that life is joy, and that we are all God's children.

If you choose, then each day of your life can become a fantastic ride of love and joy that takes you a little further along the road to Heaven. The longer you ride, too, the less steep the hills will become. The longer you ride the faster and smoother you will go. The longer you ride the more you will feel God pedaling right along beside you and smiling all the way.

May you share the color of your heart and light of your soul with everyone you meet. May you bless this whole world with your kindness, goodness, and oneness with God. May you live a life of such giving, sharing and caring that even after you pass from this world, what you did and who your were will continue to nourish the hearts and souls of those still here. May you live in love and joy today, tomorrow, and forever. And may you always remember to enjoy the ride!
Let’s all embrace this beautiful season—Sherry will be scheduling Fall Bus Rides—where you will see first hand Autumn in Western Kentucky. I encourage you to take advantage of these and future outings !

Until next month,
God Bless you,
Nancy

Perhaps the most famous icon of the holiday is the jack-o’- lantern. Various authorities attribute it to either Scottish or Irish origin. However, it seems clear that it was used as a lantern by people who traveled the road this night, the scary face to frighten away spirits or faeries who might otherwise lead one astray. Set on porches and in windows, they cast the same spell of protection over the household. The American pumpkin seems to have forever superseded the European gourd as the jack-o’- lantern of choice
