Last year I shared a wonderful and inspirational story that I thought was worth repeating. It read:
“It’s the thing about caring for people. They get into your life, sometimes briefly, and manage to become a part of who you are. Not all people, but those special individuals who arrive unexpectedly and linger there. How does it happen? They are the ones who, the first time you meet them, touch you in such a way that they leave an imprint on your heart. They are the people you look for and hope to meet along the way. They make the journey easier. Some become close friends and share everyday happenings in your life. Others just pass through leaving behind bits and pieces of who they are. Then there are those who are always there, but off in the distance somewhere within reach whenever you need them. You may only see them once in awhile, but when you do you are made better, lifted up, energized by the time you shared with them.”
After reading this, I thought about the many people in my life who fit into this group. I realized how many people I depend on each day, sometimes just to get through it! I am blessed beyond measure. It also brought up this question...“Am I one of those people?” Wouldn’t it be great if we could become more like the people we personally depend on?
Look at the people around you that you love and depend on daily. Make a list of all of the qualities they possess that you admire and value. Now, take that same list and ask yourself, “Am I as good a person?” and “Whose list am I on?”
Our Paragon residents and families mean so much to us. The staff of The Paragon strives to make each day one that’s full of love and understanding. We are so lucky to share each day with one another. Be kind to one another and wear a smile!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
God Bless,
Nancy

News From the Ice Cream Parlor
Well it’s been one year ago since that dreadful ice storm of 2009. That major catastrophe will be an event that no one will forget! I do believe that everyone learned some kind of lesson during those trying times and probably even learned more about someone you may not have known very well. One of the good things that I saw happen was that people opened their hearts and their doors without question to help someone else. Every so often we should take time out of our busy schedules to count our blessings and appreciate even the small things we take for granted.
We all should pay more attention to our lives, taking pleasure from even the smallest things that are not so obvious at first. Some of these may be as small as making someone smile, a sunset, a visit from a friend, or even a compliment. Our lives sometimes get so overwhelmed with everyday living and sometimes making sacrifices to get by, we forget to appreciate the happy things we are so fortunate to have. I hope your new year will be a safe, happy, and healthy one.
It’s that time again to select your Valentine King and Queen for 2010 . Don’t forget to cast your vote for who you want. Our ballot box is located in the sun room. You may put one vote in per day. Everyone can vote, this includes staff, residents, guests, and families, but please only vote for the residents.
Ballots will be counted on February 10th. Our King and Queen of 2010 will be announced at our Valentine’s party, Friday February 12th at 3:00 p.m.
Until next month,
Sherry

Notes from Ruth Barnett, RCC
We are often times asked what exactly is “Assisted Living.” In the next few issues, we want to spotlight some of the areas that you want to know about.
What is assisted living? Assisted living communities provide each resident with an apartment that has a lockable door and private bathroom. Residents can receive assistance with activities
of daily living (ADL’s), as well as assistance with medications. Meals, housekeeping, daily social activities, transportation, laundry and clerical services are also available. Each resident may receive health care services through a direct arrangement with an outside agency (i.e. home health care, etc) or person.
Assisted living communities offer immediate access to emergency help.
The Paragon offers a life-line pendant locket based alarm system that can alert the staff if a resident falls or has some other emergency. This safety alert system can minimize the resident from a fall, stroke and other health events because help is only a few moments away.
Assisted Living facilities also have advantages because of the social interaction between residents. When comparing an assisted living facility to living at home with in-home care, the assisted living community has a much higher level of socialization. Since most meals are served in our dining room, residents are exposed to their neighbors much more than they would be living at home.
At The Paragon, we strive to provide the most home-like setting possible. From the comfortable décor and furnishings, to the stimulating programs, fine dining and flexible transportation, we strive to incorporate all the comforts and more conveniences than you can find at home. Assisted Living communities take many of the burdens of home ownership off of the residents shoulders.
The Paragon is most fortunate to have an activities coordinator that organizes special activities/events for residents.
Our activities go beyond just playing bingo! Even though our residents enjoy bingo, we offer so many other events, such as attending special programs at The Glema Mahr Center, going to Pennyrile State Park for bingo and lunch, weekly trips the Senior Citizens Center, to the mall and bank, van rides, enjoying crafts, group outings spanning from Wal-Mart to a night at the theater.
If you have a loved one, family member or friend that would be interested in learning more about assisted living, please have them contact The Paragon at (270) 824-9006.
