Notes From Ruth Barnett

BE PRERPARED
Last winter we had something that none of us had ever experienced before—a devastating ice storm. I hope that each and everyone of us never has to go through that again!

Hence the reason for this article—winter is coming and we all need to be ready. Last winter taught us some very important lessons—it really caught us unprepared.

We were so lucky to be at The Paragon where we never missed a beat! We had 3 meals a day, warm common rooms and a 121 gallon diesel fueled generator that kept us warm, kept every thing going and a dedicated staff and owners to see that each resident was taken care of.

Just like Girl Scouts & Boy Scouts we need to be prepared!

Please ask your family members to supply you with the following items:
· Warm Socks
· Extra Blankets
· Pillows
· Sweaters
· Warm clothes

Every resident should have a battery operated lantern in their suite. In order to make this easier for your family members—The Paragon will purchase rechargeable battery packed lanterns—if you or your family members are interested in ordering one or more, please let us know—we can put the item on your bill. We purchased one as an example that will be displayed in The Paragon’s salon area. We will be happy to take orders– they should be less than $30 each. Just let Nancy, Janet, Sherry or me know and we will take care of it.

If you or your family member has purchased a space heater for your suite, please let us know. We have to be very careful about space heaters—the only ones that can be used in the building is one that if it’s knocked over, it will automatically shut off. The others could very easily put everyone in harms way.

Also remember—
NO CANDLES!

With all the reports that we hear about the Flu, H1N1, etc. we want to take this time to reiterate how important it is to take every

precaution necessary. All flu viruses spread from person to person thru personal contact. People catch the flu by touching someone else or an object that is infected and then touching their mouths or noses before washing their hands, flu viruses can also spread by couching and sneezing. Practice good hygiene etiquette. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands frequently—or use an alcohol based hand sanitize, like the one that we provide on the salon’s round table. We can never be too cautious!

I know that I have written on this subject many times—but we need to be reminded daily to take these important precautions.

Until next month, here’s
wishing you a Happy & Healthy
Thanksgiving,
Ruth

Elegant Italian Cream Fudge

** What a great candy recipe for a party—just in time for the Holidays. Enjoy!! **

Ingredients6 cups sugar 1 cup butter or margarine 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tbsp vanilla 2 1/3 cups evaporated milk 3 cups nuts (pecans, walnuts, etc)
2 cups light corn syrup

Combine sugar, evaporated milk, corn syrup & salt in a 4 qt heavy saucepan. Cook over medium to low heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a soft ball stage (238°). Remove from heat & add butter without stirring. Cool to lukewarm. Add vanilla. Beat with electric mixer at slow speed until candy thickens and is very creamy. Stir in nuts quickly. Pour into 2 buttered 8½ x 4½ x 2½loaf pans, cool until firm. Remove candy from pans & wrap each loaf in foil or plastic wrap. Store in cold place.

Make this right before or right after Thanksgiving because if you can let it set for about a month it is creamier. Be prepared to stand over it while cooking. The mixture is thick and it sticks to the pan unless your spoon keeps it moving. And when you beat the lukewarm candy, let your electric mixer do the work. (note: you can also leave out all nuts and it is still a very good rich candy) ALSO NOTE THAT THOUGH THIS IS CALLED FUDGE IT IS NOT CHOCOLATE Happy Thanksgiving!

News From the Ice Cream Parlor

Wow, it’s hard to believe that November is already here! It seemed like yesterday I was rushing to get Octobers calendar of events and newsletter together.
I want to thank David, Anita, Debbie, and Crystal Hill, to mention a few, for helping keep you all busy while I was away in meetings and on vacation. It’s a blessing to know that we have staff here that we can turn to in a time of need. When I asked for their help they didn’t hesitate to lend a hand.
Next, I want to say thank you to the positive response that I got back on the activities program surveys. Thanks again for all the nice compliments that each of you have given me. It just warms my heart to know that you are happy and content here at the Paragon. As always, if any of us in any department can make your stay any more comfortable, please let someone know. We are all here to make this as much like your home as we possibly can.
One of the programs I would really like to “pep up” is our walking club. I’m going to be purchasing some “Paragon Walking Club” t-shirts for each of you to earn during the upcoming months. I hope this will encourage you to get out and socialize and by all means, exercise more. I realize that some of you can walk more than others, but that doesn’t mean that you have to stay in your suites. We usually have something for everyone, or at least we try to. My goal as your Event Coordinator is for everyone here to be interested in at least one activity. I’m really happy if it’s more than one but my goal is at least one for everyone. I hope together we can make it happen. If you are one of those residents that can’t seem to find an activity for you, please come and talk to me and I feel confident that we can find something interesting for you!
Let’s take the time this year to remember our family and friends. What better time to do that than at Thanksgiving. Just being with family and friends creates laughter and happiness. Take the time to spend it with someone you love or genuinely care about and let them know how thankful you are to have them in your life. I know that we are thankful to have you in ours!
Until next month,
Sherry

Nancy's Welcome Mats

Turkey .... Stuffing .... Cranberry Sauce .... Pumpkin Pie —this is usually what comes to mind when we think of Thanksgiving. Granted the food is yummy and worth waiting for however, let’s not forget the most important feature of this holiday — being with family & friends. Family & friends, they are what makes this wonderful holiday so special, and help create those special memories. Memories .... Everyone has them and each is precious. I love being with my family, but I think my favorite remembrances are from long ago at my beloved grandmothers house, who has been gone from us for many years, but will always be remembered with so much love. Thanksgiving at her house was the best. Our family was not very big but with my parents, the aunts, uncles and cousins it seemed like an small army. My sister and I looked forward to spending the day with our cousins; we always had so much fun. Of course the very best part of the day was when MeMe (our grandmother) declared it was time to eat. The first order of business was getting seated at the kids table. Nothing special, just a couple of card tables put together with a tablecloth. Then came the food, makes my mouth water now just thinking about it. Please forgive me if I tend to sound just a bit prejudice – everyone’s grandmother is a great cook after all - but in my mind no one could cook like MeMe and our Mother.
The amount of food was crazy, as I said there were not that many of us but you’d think the entire town was there by the number of dishes on the table. A few hours later - no kidding - it was time for the famous turkey sandwiches and any other left over you might have a hankering for. Of course as they say all good things must come to an end, which meant it was time to go home. After what seemed like an eternity of good-byes we piled into our cars and headed for home. Today our family lives in different cities and one in another country and sadly we are missing some dear ones - but not in our hearts. So to all of you, no matter what your traditions may be, enjoy the day, the food, but most of all your loved ones.
Thanksgiving is about memories – remembering who we were, who we are, who we want to be; and for being grateful for all we have in our lives.

Thanksgiving is the time to feel gratitude to God for all the good things in life. It is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of fellowmen and be thankful.

Thanksgiving thoughts are the kind of thoughts that we should have all year long. For it is the folks with thankful hearts that fill you with Thanksgiving Peace that lasts the whole year through!

Have a wonderful
Thanksgiving!

God Bless each of you,
Nancy
